SC to traders: Give undertakings to stop misuse

New Delhi, Nov 15: The Supreme Court today asked 25,000 odd traders and professionals operating from the residential areas in the capital to give undertakings to the court appointed monitoring committee to stop misuse of their premises.

The monitoring committee thereafter, shall not resort to disconnect facilities like power and water supply from such premises or to seal the premises, the court said.

The direction was given by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal, Justice C K Thakker and Justice R V Raveendran after perusing applications filed by the Centre and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), seeking relief from the ongoing sealing operation for the traders in the capital.

The court also exempted ration shops, kerosene oil shops and cycle repair workshops from the sealing drive in addition to 22 categories of trade already exempted.

The court, however, made it clear that the process of sealing would continue in the case of other 5000 shops not protected under any category so far.
