Sri Lanka, Bangladesh Clinch Semifinal Berths in Women's Asia Cup

Hosts Sri Lanka and Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals of the women's Asia Cup T20 tournament with decisive wins over Thailand and Malaysia on Wednesday. Sri Lanka defeated Thailand by 10 wickets in the final group match, while Bangladesh triumphed over Malaysia by 114 runs earlier in the day at the same venue.

Asia Cup: SL, BD in Semifinals

In the first match, Bangladesh's opener Murshida Khatun scored 80 off 59 balls, and skipper Nigar Sultana added 62 off 37 balls, leading their team to a formidable total of 191 for 2. Opting to bat first, Khatun and wicket-keeper Dilara Akter shared a 65-run partnership for the opening wicket. Khatun then teamed up with Sultana to add another 89 runs for the second wicket, setting a solid foundation.

Bangladesh's Dominant Performance

Bangladesh restricted Malaysia to 77 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs, securing a convincing win and a spot in the semifinals. The Malaysian batters struggled against Bangladesh's disciplined bowling attack, failing to build any significant partnerships.

In the last group match, Thailand opted to bat but could only manage 93 for 7 in their 20 overs. Wicket-keeper batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai was the top scorer for Thailand with a 53-ball 47. Off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs.

Sri Lanka's Easy Chase

The chase was straightforward for Sri Lanka, with skipper Chamari Athapaththu scoring an unbeaten 49 and Vishmi Gunaratne remaining not out on 39. The Sri Lankan openers made light work of the target, guiding their team to victory without losing any wickets. None of the Thai bowlers could trouble the Sri Lankan batters.

In the semifinals, defending champions India will face Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka will compete against Pakistan on Friday. These matches promise to be exciting as teams vie for a place in the final.

The performances of Murshida Khatun and Nigar Sultana were instrumental in Bangladesh's commanding win. Their partnerships ensured a high total that Malaysia couldn't chase down. Similarly, Sri Lanka's bowlers and openers played crucial roles in their comprehensive victory over Thailand.

The upcoming semifinals will be closely watched as India takes on Bangladesh and Sri Lanka faces Pakistan. Both matches are expected to be competitive, with teams aiming for a spot in the final of the women's Asia Cup T20 tournament.
