Saurabh Chaudhary Breaks National Record in 10m Air Pistol, Aiming for National Squad Return
Saurabh Chaudhary, a shooter once seen as an Olympic hopeful, has made a significant comeback. He set a new national record in the 10m air pistol event with a score of 591 during the National Championship at the Karni Singh Ranges. His primary goal is to rejoin the national squad and compete internationally after overcoming a shoulder injury and a decline in form.

Chaudhary's recent performance surpassed his previous record of 589, achieved in Osjek, Croatia, in 2021. Despite the final being scheduled for January 5, he remains optimistic about his return to the national team after more than two years. The world record for men's air pistol is held by Jin Jongoh of Korea, who scored 594 at the Changwon World Cup in 2009.
Focus on Practice and Training
Saurabh has not set any long-term goals, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "I have not set any goals. My focus is only on practice," he stated. His dedication to training has been consistent throughout his career, with Samaresh Jung as his personal coach since 2018. He trains either at the National Centre of Excellence or at his home range in Kalina village.
Reflecting on his journey, Saurabh mentioned that he overcame his shoulder injury by adjusting his posture. "I had a shoulder injury but I overcame it by changing my posture," he explained. This adjustment has been crucial in helping him regain his form and confidence.
Past Collaborations and Future Aspirations
In Tokyo 2021, Saurabh teamed up with Manu Bhaker in the mixed team event. Recently, Manu won a bronze medal with Sarabjot Singh in Paris. Despite not winning a medal with Manu, Saurabh expressed no regrets about missing out on that opportunity.
For Saurabh, three years away from major competitions felt like no time at all. "I have been practising all along," he said. His recent qualification score is a step towards reclaiming his place in the national squad, which remains his primary aim.
Saurabh's determination and focus on practice have been pivotal in his journey back to competitive shooting. His recent achievements highlight his resilience and commitment to the sport, setting the stage for future successes on both national and international platforms.
