Paris Olympics 2024: IOC Issues Apology After Introducing South Korea As North Korea

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued an apology on Saturday for a error during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. South Korean athletes were mistakenly introduced as North Korean. As the South Korean team sailed down the Seine river, they were announced with North Korea's official name in both French and English.

"We deeply apologise for the mistake that occurred when introducing the South Korean team during the broadcast of the opening ceremony," stated the IOC on its official Korean-language X account. This blunder triggered strong reactions in South Korea, a nation known for its cultural and technological advancements, which remains technically at war with North Korea.

South Korea's Response

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee revealed that it had received a message from the IOC indicating that its chief, Thomas Bach, wished to personally apologise to South Korea's president over the phone. Earlier, South Korea's sports ministry expressed regret over the incident in a statement, highlighting their displeasure with the misidentification during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Second vice sports minister Jang Mi-ran, a 2008 Olympic weightlifting champion, requested a meeting with IOC chief Bach to discuss this matter further. Additionally, South Korea's foreign ministry contacted the French embassy in Seoul, which also expressed regret over what it termed an "incomprehensible mistake."

North Korea's Correct Introduction

Interestingly, North Korea was correctly introduced with its official name during the ceremony. This contrast added to the frustration felt by South Koreans. Relations between North and South Korea are currently strained, with North Korea strengthening military ties with Russia and sending propaganda balloons southward.

In retaliation, Seoul's military has been broadcasting K-pop and anti-regime messages from border loudspeakers. They have also resumed live-fire drills on border islands and near the demilitarised zone dividing the peninsula.

This incident underscores ongoing tensions between the two Koreas and highlights how even minor errors can have significant diplomatic repercussions. The IOC's prompt apology aims to mitigate any further fallout from this unfortunate mistake.
