French World Cup Winner Olivier Giroud Signs with Los Angeles FC

Los Angeles FC has officially announced the signing of World Cup-winning French striker Olivier Giroud, marking a significant addition to their squad. The 37-year-old forward is making a move to Major League Soccer after an illustrious 18-year career across Europe's top leagues, including stints in France, England, and Italy. Giroud, leaving AC Milan, has agreed to a contract with LAFC that extends through 2025, with an option for 2026.

Giroud Moves to LAFC

John Thorrington, LAFC's general manager, expressed the club's long-standing interest in Giroud, noting attempts to secure his services as early as the January transfer window. The decision to wait for Giroud's availability this summer underscores the strategic approach LAFC is taking to bolster their attacking options. Thorrington highlighted Giroud's multifaceted abilities on the field, emphasizing not just his goal-scoring prowess but also his capability to enhance overall team play.

Giroud's football journey is decorated with significant achievements, including a Champions League victory with Chelsea and a pivotal role in France's 2018 World Cup triumph. With 285 goals in 716 club matches and a record 57 goals for the French national team, his experience and leadership are expected to be invaluable for LAFC. Despite his extensive career, Giroud is set to represent France once more at the European Championship next month.

The timing of Giroud's debut for LAFC remains uncertain, though it is anticipated to occur in late July. This scheduling follows a precedent set by defender Giorgio Chiellini, who joined LAFC in May 2022 but didn't make his debut until mid-July after completing a season with Juventus.

Giroud expressed his enthusiasm about joining LAFC and playing in front of the club's passionate supporters. With two more matches left with Milan, where he has been a key player this season, Giroud looks forward to bringing his high level of productivity and playmaking abilities to MLS.

LAFC currently stands fifth in the MLS Western Conference, with a strong offensive record highlighted by Denis Bouanga and now further strengthened by Giroud's arrival. The French striker will also reunite with Hugo Lloris, his longtime teammate from the French national team, who joined LAFC earlier this season.

Thorrington pointed out that while LAFC values star power, especially in a city like Los Angeles, the decision to sign players like Giroud is driven by their potential to contribute significantly on the field. With a history of integrating talent from across the Americas and Europe, LAFC continues to build a competitive roster aimed at achieving further success.
