Table Tennis Star Ma Long Secures Historic Sixth Olympic Gold for China

AP Ma Long has become the most successful Chinese athlete in Olympic history, securing his sixth gold medal in the men's table tennis team final at the Paris Games on Friday. China triumphed over Sweden, marking their fifth consecutive Olympic victory in this event. At 35, Ma has won at least one gold medal in every Summer Games since London 2012.

Ma Longs Historic Sixth Olympic Gold

Ma Long's Remarkable Journey

Reflecting on his career, Ma said, "These past 12 years have been a journey filled with ups and downs, and I feel incredibly fortunate. I've played many different roles in each Olympics." He added, "After Tokyo I didn't expect to be here in Paris, but these three years have helped me grow mentally and technically. This gold medal is a great way to conclude my Olympic journey."

Ma is the only player to have won four gold medals in the team event, achieving victories in Paris, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, and London. He also claimed singles gold medals in Tokyo and Rio but did not participate in the singles tournament in Paris.

China's Dominance in Table Tennis

China has long been a powerhouse in table tennis, sweeping all four Olympic gold medals so far in Paris. The other victories came from the men's and women's singles tournaments and the mixed doubles event. The women's team final is scheduled for Saturday, where China will face Japan.

Since table tennis was introduced to the Olympic program at Seoul 1988, China has won 36 out of 41 gold medals. This dominance continued with France winning bronze in the men's team event after defeating Japan. This marked France's first-ever medal in this category.

Felix Lebrun's Joyful Experience

Seventeen-year-old Frenchman Felix Lebrun expressed his excitement: "It was incredible. It was a dream for all three of us to live it together after an incredible match. These were unforgettable emotions, and we will remember this for a long time. It is a magical moment, and we're delighted to share it with the team and the public."

Ma Long announced that while he is ending his Olympic career, he is not retiring from competition entirely. "You might still see me on the international table tennis stage in the future," he said.

China's continued success in table tennis highlights their dominance and commitment to excellence in the sport. The upcoming women's team final against Japan promises to be another exciting chapter in China's Olympic journey.
