Paris Olympics 2024: India Beats Spain 2-1 To Win Bronze Medal In Hockey
India secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Spain to clinch the bronze medal in the men's hockey event at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, August 8, marking a memorable farewell for their legendary goalkeeper, PR Sreejesh. Captain Harmanpreet Singh shone as the hero, netting two spectacular goals to help India retain the bronze medal they had won at the Tokyo Olympics.

Spain took an early lead when Marc Miralles Portillo skillfully converted a penalty stroke in the 18th minute, outmaneuvering Sreejesh. Despite several more penalty corners in the second quarter, Spain was unable to extend their lead, thanks to India's vigilant defense, led by Sreejesh.
Desperate for an equalizer, India pinned their hopes on Harmanpreet Singh, and the captain delivered. His powerful drag flick found the back of Spain's net in the 30th minute, bringing India back into contention. Harmanpreet struck again in the third quarter (33rd minute), giving India a decisive 2-1 lead.
Spain fought valiantly, pushing hard to level the score, but India's defense held firm, securing the bronze in a closely contested match.
India's Olympic campaign began with a nail-biting 3-2 victory over New Zealand. The Black Sticks took an early lead with Sam Lane's eighth-minute goal, but India fought back, with Mandeep Singh (24') and Vivek Sagar Prasad (34') putting them ahead 2-1. New Zealand equalized in the 53rd minute through Simon Child, but Harmanpreet Singh's late goal secured the win for India.
In their second Pool B match, India faced a tough challenge from Argentina, who took the lead through Lucas Martinez. Just when it seemed Argentina would maintain a clean sheet, Harmanpreet rescued India with a 59th-minute equalizer.
India dominated Ireland in their third match, winning 2-0 with a brace from Harmanpreet. However, they suffered their first loss to Belgium, going down 2-1. In their final group stage match, India stunned Australia with a 3-2 victory.
The quarterfinal against Great Britain was an intense battle. India played nearly three quarters with just 10 men after Amit Rohidas received a red card for an intentional tackle. Despite this disadvantage, India took the lead in the 22nd minute, only for Great Britain to equalize five minutes later. India held on to force a penalty shootout, where PR Sreejesh's heroics led them to victory.
In the semifinals, India faced Germany in a fiercely contested match. Despite their best efforts, Marco Miltkau's 54th-minute goal ended India's dreams of reaching the final.
