Harmanpreet's Late Strike Seals Dramatic 3-2 Win for India Over NZ

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty stroke in the final moments, leading India to a narrow 3-2 victory over New Zealand in their Paris Olympics opener on Saturday. Sam Lane scored for New Zealand in the 8th minute, and Simon Child added another in the 53rd. Mandeep Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Harmanpreet Singh scored for India in the 24th, 34th, and 59th minutes respectively.

Late Goal Gives India Win Over NZ

India began the match aggressively, with Harmanpreet and Abhishek putting pressure on New Zealand's defence. Despite India's offensive start, New Zealand managed to score first through Lane from a penalty corner. This early goal jolted India into action, and they controlled the game for most of the match.

Penalty Corner Conversion Concerns

Despite the win, India's chief coach Craig Fulton expressed concerns about the team's penalty corner conversion rate. India earned five penalty corners but converted only one. In contrast, New Zealand had nine set pieces and utilised two of them. This disparity highlights an area where India needs improvement.

India equalised in the 24th minute when Mandeep scored from a rebound after Harmanpreet's flick was saved by New Zealand goalkeeper Dominic Dixon. Shortly after halftime, Dixon saved another attempt from Mandeep's reverse hit following a precise assist from Harmanpreet.

India's Defensive Struggles

Vivek Sagar Prasad gave India the lead four minutes into the second half by scoring from a goalmouth scramble. However, New Zealand quickly responded with four consecutive penalty corners but failed to convert any of them. Their persistence paid off when Child scored from a rebound to level the scores.

India's experienced goalkeeper PR Sreejesh acknowledged that the performance was a wake-up call for his team. "The first match in the Olympics is never easy. New Zealand is not an easy team. We made some mistakes, but there were a few good things as well. It's a good wake-up call," Sreejesh said.

Coach Fulton's Tactical Insights

Coach Fulton admitted that India could have played more aggressively. "There are a few plans that we have. But we have different plans for different teams. And the best form of defence at times is attack. And we didn't really do enough with the ball," he said.

"On the ball, we weren't that good today in terms of keeping possession. But New Zealand are a competitive team, so they did well. They intercepted a lot of ball and that. So little areas, where we need to work," Fulton added.

The match concluded dramatically as India sought a winning goal with relentless pressure. Sukhjeet Singh earned a penalty corner through smart play, which led to another set-piece opportunity. The second penalty corner resulted in a penalty stroke for India after Harmanpreet's drag flick hit Child on the body.

"We got three points and that's what is important. We gave them opportunities and they converted. The last few minutes were not easy but in hockey it's always like that, from the first whistle to the last, there is tension," Sreejesh noted.

Harmanpreet made no mistake with the penalty stroke, securing a crucial win for his team. India will next face Argentina on Monday, aiming to build on their opening victory.
