Late Goal by Harmanpreet Singh Gifts India 3-2 Victory Over NZ in Olympics Hockey
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored the decisive goal from the spot a minute before full time, securing India a 3-2 victory over New Zealand in their opening Pool B match of the Paris Olympics on Saturday. Sam Lane and Simon Child netted for New Zealand, while Mandeep Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, and Harmanpreet Singh scored for India.

India began aggressively, with Harmanpreet and Abhishek pressing hard against New Zealand's defence. Despite this, New Zealand initially opted to defend and counter-attack. They stunned India by scoring first through Lane from their initial penalty corner. This early setback prompted India to control the game for most of the match.
Penalty Corner Challenges
India's chief coach Craig Fulton might be concerned about the team's penalty corner conversion rate. India earned five penalty corners but converted only one. In contrast, New Zealand had nine set pieces, converting two of them. This disparity highlights an area for improvement in India's gameplay.
India equalised in the 24th minute when Mandeep scored from a rebound after Harmanpreet's flick was saved by New Zealand goalkeeper Dominic Dixon. Shortly after halftime, Dixon saved another shot from Mandeep following a precise assist from Harmanpreet.
Second Half Drama
Four minutes into the second half, Vivek scored from a goalmouth scramble to give India the lead. However, New Zealand quickly responded by securing four consecutive penalty corners, though they failed to convert any of them. The Black Sticks continued their attacking efforts and eventually levelled the score when Child converted from a rebound.
The match remained intense as India sought a crucial win. Sukhjeet Singh's smart play earned India another penalty corner, which led to a penalty stroke after Harmanpreet's drag flick hit Child on the body. Harmanpreet made no mistake in converting the stroke, ensuring India's victory.
India will face Argentina in their next Pool B match on Monday. This upcoming game will be crucial as they aim to build on their winning momentum.
The Indians utilised both flanks effectively to build their attacks while New Zealand focused on defending and counter-attacking. Despite trailing, New Zealand kept up their attacking intent and secured two more penalty corners in quick succession before Child's equaliser.
Throughout the match, India's relentless pressure paid off as they managed to secure a valuable win in the final moments. The team's resilience and strategic play were evident as they overcame early setbacks to clinch victory.
This win sets a positive tone for India's campaign in the Paris Olympics, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure and adapt to challenging situations on the field.
