Earlier, Karnataka's bowlers dominated Day 1, bundling Punjab out for a mere 55 runs. Karnataka ended the day at 199/4, largely thanks to Smaran's unbeaten 83 off 100 balls, featuring 12 boundaries and a six.

Smaran's innings was a masterclass in stroke play, highlighted by his domination of Gurnoor Brar in the 30th over, where he struck three boundaries in four deliveries. His ability to handle balls on his legs was evident as he brought up his half-century with a boundary and followed it with a six off Jassinder Singh over mid-wicket.

Despite starts from other batters like K.V. Aneesh, Mayank Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, and K.L. Shrijith, it was Smaran who anchored Karnataka's reply to Punjab's paltry total.
