Team India Will Not Travel To Pakistan For Champions Trophy 2025: BCCI Tells ICC

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that India will not participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, according to ESPNCricinfo. The tournament is set to start on February 19, 2025, at three venues in Pakistan. However, the Indian team won't travel there due to advice from the Indian government.

As a result, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and ICC might consider alternative arrangements. A hybrid model could be an option, similar to the Asia Cup 2023 held in both Pakistan and Sri Lanka after India's refusal to play in Pakistan. The ICC was reportedly informed of BCCI's decision earlier this week, though it's unclear if this was communicated orally or if a written statement is awaited.

PCB's Response and Future Implications

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi mentioned that no official communication has been received from BCCI regarding this matter. He also clarified that there have been no discussions about a hybrid model and that PCB does not support such an arrangement. "In the last two months, the Indian media has been reporting that India isn't travelling," Naqvi stated during a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium.

Naqvi emphasized that any objections from India must be provided in writing. "If we get a letter from India, I'll have to go to my government and have to abide by their decisions," he said. He also noted that while Pakistan has shown goodwill towards India previously, such gestures should not be expected if India refuses to visit.

Potential Hybrid Model Venues

If a hybrid model is considered, UAE might host India's matches due to its proximity to Pakistan. Sri Lanka is another potential venue for these matches. The decision on whether Pakistan will travel for future events in India will depend on the Pakistani government's stance if India declines participation in the Champions Trophy.

The PCB's position remains firm: they require formal communication from BCCI before any decisions are made. Naqvi reiterated that no discussions about a hybrid model have occurred and stressed the importance of written objections from India regarding cross-border travel for the tournament.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions between the cricket boards of both nations, with implications for future tournaments and bilateral relations. The ICC may need to mediate or find alternative solutions if an agreement isn't reached soon.
