Rohit Sharma Takes Responsibility Of India's Series Defeat Vs New Zealand; Says Many Tactical Errors

India faced a historic defeat, as New Zealand secured a series whitewash, marking India's first in a Test series of three or more matches at home. This landmark victory was achieved on November 3, in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, where New Zealand bowled India out for 121 while defending a target of 147. Ajaz Patel's exceptional six-wicket haul paved the way for the visitors' triumph.

Following this unprecedented loss, Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, expressed his disappointment and accepted full responsibility for the team's performance. During the post-match press conference, after the 25-run defeat in the third game, he admitted, "I fully take the responsibility of this as a captain. I have not been at my best." Rohit's personal performance in the series was far from satisfactory. Aside from a single half-century in Bengaluru, he only managed to reach double digits twice across the other innings.

He acknowledged his shortcomings, attributing tactical mistakes and his own form to the loss of the series.

Critics have raised concerns over Sharma's batting strategy throughout the recently concluded home season, noting his preference for an overly aggressive approach. Contrary to the criticism, the 37-year-old captain defended his technique, stating, "I haven't lost faith in my defence. I need to spend more time out there. It's been only these two series that I haven't batted well. As you grow, you try to evolve and as a batter, I am trying to do that. I will relook at my game and see what I can do."

In the midst of the struggle, Rishabh Pant's remarkable performance stood out. He scored 64 runs and appeared to be the only Indian batsman who could effectively counter Ajaz Patel's spin. Despite the challenging conditions, Pant took the attack to Patel, employing an array of shots including ramps, sweeps, and hits.

However, his innings were cut short by a controversial bat-pad catch, leaving India 41 runs short of the target. The final moments of the match saw Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin trying to hold the fort, but Ashwin's departure via a caught behind off a reverse sweep and Glenn Phillips dismissing Akash Deep added to India's woes before Patel claimed the last wicket of Sundar.

This series outcome raises significant questions about India's strategy and execution in the Test format, particularly under Rohit Sharma's leadership. His commitment to reassessing and improving his game reflects a hopeful outlook for future performances. Nonetheless, the series against New Zealand stands as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the Indian Test team.
