Mohammed Shami Will Not Join Team India For BGT: Report

The Indian cricket team is eagerly awaiting the arrival of experienced bowler Mohammed Shami in Australia. However, his fitness issues have delayed his journey. Initially, it seemed Shami might play in the last two Tests of the series, but ongoing concerns about his health have stopped the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from sending him to Australia.

India's captain, Rohit Sharma, addressed questions about Shami's status after the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. While he left the possibility open for Shami's return, Rohit did not provide a specific timeline. The captain mentioned that Shami is dealing with a swollen knee as he works on regaining match fitness during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Bengal.

Shami's Fitness Concerns

A report from the Indian Express revealed that Shami recently underwent a fitness test. The results indicated that he is not yet ready for five-day cricket. Consequently, any plans for him to fly to Australia soon are unlikely. Despite this, Shami will participate in Bengal's quarterfinal against Baroda at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where his fitness will be further evaluated.

There are uncertainties about whether Shami can handle long spells in red-ball cricket due to his knee issues. Although he has been bowling four overs for Bengal's T20 team, there are still concerns about his readiness for more extended formats.

Rohit Sharma's Perspective

Rohit Sharma expressed caution regarding Shami's return to international cricket. He emphasised that they do not want to rush him back unless they are entirely confident in his fitness. "We want to be more than 100% sure with him because it has been a long time," Rohit stated.

He added that professionals are monitoring Shami closely and will make decisions based on their assessments. "They are the ones watching him every game," Rohit explained, highlighting the importance of ensuring Shami's full recovery before rejoining the team.

Since returning to competitive cricket, Shami has played one Ranji Trophy match and participated in all seven of Bengal's matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). He has performed well with both bat and ball during these games.

The Indian team remains hopeful about Shami's potential contribution but prioritises his health above all else. As Rohit mentioned, "The door is open for him to come and play anytime," indicating that while they await his return eagerly, they will not compromise on his well-being.
