IPL 2025 Mega Auction In Jeddah: The Most Expensive Player Over the Years
The Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions have always been a spectacle of sorts, with players vying for top spots in terms of their auction value. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has seen a significant increase in the amounts bid for players, with the auction for the 2025 season set to take place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Among the expected highlights for the 2025 auction, players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are anticipated to attract bids upwards of Rs 20 crore.\

Reflecting on the history of IPL auctions, several players have garnered attention with their record-breaking auction prices. The most notable among them is Australia's pacer Mitchell Starc, who fetched a whopping Rs 24.75 crore from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), making him the most expensive player in IPL's history to date. This record-breaking bid showcases the franchise's willingness to invest heavily in players who they believe can make a significant impact on their performance.
From the beginning, the IPL auctions have been a battleground for franchises to secure top talent. The very first auction in 2008 saw former India captain MS Dhoni being snapped up by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for Rs 9.5 crore, marking the highest bid of that edition. Dhoni's association with CSK has been a constant, except for a two-year hiatus when the franchise faced suspension, during which he played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant.
The auctions over the years have witnessed several other players achieving high bid statuses. Notably, the 2010 auction deviated from this trend when Kieron Pollard and Shane Bond were both acquired for Rs 4.8 crore each, a figure that pales in comparison to today's standards but, when adjusted for inflation, translates to a considerable amount in the current financial landscape.
A Look at IPL's Auction History

The second auction in 2009 saw Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff being bought for Rs 9.8 crore each by the Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, respectively. The 2015 auction saw Yuvraj Singh being bought for Rs 16 crore by the Delhi Daredevils, a record at the time. The following years witnessed a consistent rise in player values, with Ben Stokes being a notable mention for fetching high prices in consecutive years, 2017 and 2018, for Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals, respectively.
