Champions Trophy 2025: ICC Makes Eye-Popping Offer To PCB To Accept Hybrid Schedule

In an effort to resolve the ongoing dispute regarding the venue for the Champions Trophy, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has proposed compromise to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The has suggested a hybrid model for hosting the tournament, a solution that accommodates the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (B) refusal to play in Pakistan. Despite the BCCI's stance, the PCB has submitted a draft schedule for the event, with hopes of hosting it entirely within Pakistan. Nonetheless, the ICC's intervention indicates a push towards reaching an agreement that satisfies all parties involved.

An ICC insider revealed that the PCB is being enticed with additional financial incentives to agree to the hybrid model, which would see India's matches played in the United Arab Emirates, with the potential final in Dubai if India advances. This comes after the PCB's steadfast refusal to deviate from hosting the tournament solely in Pakistan, a position bolstered by the willingness of the other six participating nations to play there. Despite this, the PCB has reportedly been adamant that any hybrid arrangement should still feature key matches, such as the Pakistan-India group stage match and the final, in Lahore.

ICC Makes Offer To PCB

The ICC is scheduled to hold an executive board meeting to discuss this contentious issue. The meeting aims to clarify the format under which the Champions Trophy will proceed early next year. "Chances are (that) by tomorrow (Tuesday), a clear picture will emerge after a virtual discussion by board representatives on under which format the Champions Trophy would eventually be held early next year," the insider noted. This meeting is crucial in determining whether a compromise can be reached or if the deadlock will persist.

PCB's Stance on Hybrid Model

The PCB's resistance to the hybrid model is not new. Last year, for the Asia Cup, the PCB had to reluctantly adopt a similar approach, with the majority of matches, including the final, being hosted in Sri Lanka. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been reticent on the delay in finalizing the Champions Trophy schedule but has emphasized the board's preference for hosting the event in Pakistan as planned. The Champions Trophy is slated to start on February 19 and conclude on March 9, with Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi as the proposed venues. According to a PCB official, preparations, including stadium construction and renovations, are proceeding on schedule to ensure the venues are ready for the prestigious tournament.

India's Position and the Proposed Hybrid Model

The BCCI's insistence on not traveling to Pakistan has been a significant factor in the ongoing discussions. The Indian cricket board's demand for all its matches, including potential semi-finals and the final, to be played in Dubai, including the highly anticipated match against Pakistan, has been a sticking point. The PCB, on the other hand, has been unwavering in its position that if India refuses to play in Pakistan, it should be considered India's issue, as the other participating nations have no objections to the venue.

In conclusion, the ICC's attempt to broker a compromise through the hybrid model and financial incentives underscores the complexities of cricket diplomacy. The outcome of the upcoming executive board meeting will be pivotal in determining the format and location of the Champions Trophy, reflecting the broader challenges of balancing political considerations with the sport's global appeal and integrity.
