27 Detained in Copa America Final Disorder, Including Soccer Official's Son

The Miami-Dade Police Department reported 27 arrests and 55 ejections following crowd control issues at the Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia. Fans breached security gates at Hard Rock Stadium, causing chaos before the 8 pm match.

Copa America Final Ends in 27 Arrests

Among those arrested was Ramon Jamil Jesurun, son of Ramón Jesurún, head of Colombia's soccer governing body. He faced three counts of battery on an official after allegedly fighting multiple security guards.

Security Concerns and Damage

Chief Public Safety Officer James Reyes stated, "We are working with the event organisers to conduct a comprehensive review of all safety and security protocols, as we continue to prepare for the World Cup in 2026." The chaotic scene saw fans jumping over railings and running past police officers and stadium attendants.

Significant damage occurred at the venue. Videos and images on social media showed shattered side railings of an escalator inside the stadium. Items like shoes, soda cans, reading glasses, and clothing were left behind. Security railings at a checkpoint in the southwest entrance were bent as thousands pushed against them.

Law Enforcement Presence

The department confirmed that over 800 law enforcement officers were present at the event. Despite this large presence, the situation escalated quickly, leading to numerous arrests and ejections.

Fans appeared hysterical as they searched for their companions amidst the chaos. The breach led to significant disruptions just hours before the championship match between the two South American countries.

The incident highlights the need for improved security measures at large sporting events. The review by event organisers and law enforcement aims to prevent similar occurrences in future events, especially with the upcoming World Cup in 2026.

The Miami-Dade Police Department's swift response helped manage the situation, but the damage and disorder underscore challenges in crowd control at major events. Ensuring safety and security remains a top priority for future preparations.
