Strait of Hormuz Shut: Iran Closes Key Waterway After Vessel Takes Unauthorised Route, Ignores Warnings

Just a day after the end of funeral of Iran's former supreme leader - Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran has announced the shutting of Strait of Hormuz.

One must know that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil shipping routes that was announced closed following a maritime incident where a vessel allegedly violated its security rules. This is a big development as it rises the tension in the Gulf region and raised concerns over global supplies and trade.

According to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said that the passage will remain shut until further notice and also added that any military action against Iran would be a strong response.

Iran Says Vessel Violated Security Rules

Based on the statement issued by the IRGC Navy, a vessel travelling through the Strait was stopped after it allegedly turned off its tracking system and entered through an illegal route. Iran further claimed that the ship ignored repeated warnings to change its passage forcing its naval forces to take action.

The vessel however was struck and brought to a halt but they did not reveal the identity of the vessel or the members onboard.

Strait of Hormuz Closed Until Further Notice

And it was after this incident that Iran declared the closure of Strait of Hormuz until further notice. The military also issued a warning that any country attempting to challenge the closure or launch military action against Iran will face 'severe response'. Iran also held the United States, Israel and countries hosting military bases used against Iran responsible for any consequences arising from the current situation.

US Calls for Free Navigation

On the other hand the US urged Iran to guarantee safe and free shipping in the strait of Hormuz. The demand comes as tensions remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.

Diplomatic Talks Continue Through Oman

It is the regional mediators that the diplomatic talks between Iran and US have continued. US President Donald Trump stated that both the nations agreed to continue discussions. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also travelled to Oman, where he met Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

Several reports suggest that mediators from Qatar and Pakistan were involved in attempts to get both the sides back on the negotiating table.
