Pune Water Cut: PCMC Announces Supply Disruptions, Check List Of Affected Areas

Pune water cut: With temperatures soaring above 40°C for over two months and a heatwave warning in place, Pune and its neighbouring city Pimpri-Chinchwad are facing an escalating water crisis. Amid this, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued a stern warning to housing societies regarding the activation of their Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs).

Pune Water Cut PCMC Announces Supply Disruptions Check Day-Wise List Of Affected Areas

A serious environmental lapse has been identified in Pimpri-Chinchwad, where 184 large housing societies are not operating their required Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued up to three notices to these societies, which are mandated to run functional STPs under the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) if they have over 100 flats or consume more than 20,000 liters of water per day.

"Despite repeated appeals and formal notices, these societies continue to keep their STPs shut," said PCMC Chief Engineer Sanjay Kulkarni. "The civic body will now resort to cutting off water supply to the defaulters."

Civic data reveals that out of 456 major housing societies in the area, only 264 have operational STPs. The remaining 184 have either cited financial constraints or offered vague excuses for not running their treatment systems. Alarmingly, eight societies even denied access to PCMC inspection teams.

As the region struggles with rising heat and water shortages, the civic body's crackdown highlights the urgency for stricter compliance with environmental norms.
