Voter Deletion Row Sparks Debate At Delhi Electoral Meeting Ahead Of Assembly Polls

The controversy over alleged voter deletions took centre stage during a tense all-party meeting convened by the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in preparation for the Assembly elections scheduled early next year.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress expressed serious concerns about the purported removal of voters from the electoral rolls, accusing officials of disenfranchising citizens without adhering to proper procedures, reported India Today.

At the heart of the disagreement was the summary revision process carried out by election officials. While BJP representatives defended the process as satisfactory, AAP and Congress countered, claiming that voters were being removed without being given sufficient opportunity to contest their exclusion, raising fears of possible manipulation of the democratic process.

Prominent leaders such as AAP's Pankaj Gupta and Jasmine Shah, alongside Congress's Chatar Singh, strongly criticised the lack of transparency and fairness in the summary revision. They warned that such practices could undermine the integrity of the democratic system.

Singh highlighted significant anomalies in voter registration data, pointing out an unusually low growth rate. Since the 2013 Assembly elections, voter registrations typically increased by at least 10% per election. However, this year, the rise was just over 3%. Singh argued that even if all four lakh pending applications for voter additions were approved, the growth would still fall well below historical trends. He suggested these discrepancies could reflect intentional or inadvertent biases in the voter deletion process.

The BJP, on the other hand, defended the revision process, asserting it followed established guidelines. Party representatives also raised their own concerns, citing instances of disproportionately high voter registrations at single addresses in some slum areas, which they suggested required investigation.

The Delhi CEO's office pledged to thoroughly review the complaints and pending voter applications to address the concerns raised by all parties.
