Tender Launched For India's First Air Train to Link Delhi Airport Terminals by 2027
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced an ambitious endeavor to revolutionize the way passengers traverse between terminals at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). By introducing an Automated People Mover (APM), commonly known as an air train, DIAL aims to significantly ease passenger movement across Terminals 1, 2, and 3. This initiative will not only provide a seamless connection to Aerocity and Cargo City but also align with environmental considerations by reducing the carbon footprint associated with the current shuttle bus services.
The introduction of the air train is set to eliminate the existing shuttle bus service, criticized by many for its inefficiency and inconvenience. This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize and streamline the transfer experience for travelers. By connecting the terminals over an approximate distance of 7.7 km, the air train promises a swift and hassle-free journey for passengers. Slated for completion by the end of 2027, the project underscores DIAL's commitment to enhancing airport infrastructure and passenger services.

DIAL's plan originally proposed an eight-kilometer route with six stops. However, based on governmental advice, the plan has been refined to include three primary stops: Terminal 1 (T1), Terminal 2/3 (T2/3), and Aerocity. This revision aims to accelerate transfers and bolster security within the airport premises. With the airport's annual passenger capacity exceeding 70 million and ongoing expansions to accommodate future growth, this infrastructure upgrade is deemed essential. The air train is expected to serve around 25% of total passengers, significantly enhancing their travel experience.
The project, estimated to cost about Rs 2,000 crore, is envisioned to be undertaken on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, Transfer (DBFOT) basis. DIAL plans to initiate the tender process within the coming months, with expectations to award the contract before the end of this fiscal year. This strategic investment reflects DIAL's commitment to facilitating a more efficient, comfortable, and environmentally sustainable mode of transit between terminals at IGIA.
Upon its completion, the air train service is projected to be free for passengers. The operational costs are anticipated to be recuperated through aeronautical revenues and user development fees. This endeavor underscores a significant leap towards enhancing passenger convenience and operational efficiency at IGIA. By providing a rapid, reliable, and cost-free mode of transport across the airport's terminals, DIAL aims to elevate the overall passenger experience while ensuring the sustainability of its operations.
