Jat Reservation Debate Intensifies in Delhi Assembly Elections as AAP Seeks Inclusion in OBC List

The Jat reservation issue has become a focal point in the Delhi Assembly elections. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has intensified the debate by writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kejriwal's party aims to leverage this issue as a key election strategy. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is determined to protect its significant voter base from being swayed.

Delhi's Jat community is at the centre of this political tussle. Kejriwal has urged for their inclusion in the central OBC list, claiming they miss out on reservations in central jobs and educational institutions. On January 9, he addressed this in a letter to PM Modi. He also mentioned that PM Modi had promised this inclusion back in 2015.

Jat voters, numbering around 7,00,000, are spread across Delhi's 70 Assembly seats. Historically, they have shown strong support for the BJP in Lok Sabha elections. However, during Assembly elections, their votes sometimes shift towards AAP, influenced by local issues and candidates.

The BJP has responded robustly to Kejriwal's claims. Kamaljeet Sehrawat, a BJP MP and Jat leader, accused Kejriwal of trying to provoke the Jat community for political gain. She questioned why he did not address the reservation issue during his decade-long tenure. The BJP argues that Kejriwal's actions are driven by fear of electoral defeat.

In 2014, ahead of general elections, the Congress-led UPA government included Jats in the central OBC list. However, in 2015, the Supreme Court overturned this decision. The court questioned why the government disregarded a panel's recommendations against granting this quota.

The Jat vote bank plays a crucial role in several Delhi constituencies. Seats like Narela, Rithala, Bawana, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka, Palam, Matiala, Nangloi Jat, Vikaspuri, Mehrauli and Bijwasan see significant influence from Jat voters.

Kejriwal recently met with several Jat leaders at his residence to discuss their concerns. He later stated that these leaders expressed gratitude for his efforts to address their reservation demands with PM Modi.

The BJP also highlighted Kailash Gahlot's attempts to raise Jat-related issues with Kejriwal during his time with AAP. They claim these efforts were ignored by Kejriwal.

This ongoing debate over Jat reservation continues to shape the political landscape as both parties vie for support from this influential community.
