Delhi Weather: Light Rains Bring Relief to National Capital Amid Rising Temperatures

New Delhi experienced a welcome change in weather on Tuesday morning as light showers swept across the city, offering temporary respite from the rising heat. The rainfall, accompanied by overcast skies and damp roads, brought a noticeable dip in temperature, making the commute more pleasant for many residents.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital is expected to record a minimum temperature of 20°C and a maximum of 31°C during the day. The forecast suggests thunderstorms with light rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. These conditions are likely to persist throughout the day, signalling an extended spell of unsettled weather.

The showers also had a modest impact on Delhi's air quality. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 117, placing it in the "Moderate" category. While this marks an improvement compared to poorer levels seen in recent days, authorities continue to advise caution, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

The IMD has issued a broader outlook for Northwest India, predicting isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 6 April. Similar conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and East Rajasthan. A fresh wet spell is anticipated between 7 and 10 April, with widespread rainfall and snowfall forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Delhi, along with parts of West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is likely to witness scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on 7 and 8 April. The IMD has also warned of thundersqualls in Rajasthan, with wind speeds potentially reaching up to 70 kmph. Isolated hailstorms are expected across northern states, including Delhi, during this period. Heavy rainfall is predicted in select regions such as the Kashmir Valley and Himachal Pradesh.

The change in weather has been welcomed by residents of Delhi, who have endured steadily rising temperatures in recent weeks. However, the IMD's warnings highlight the need for caution, as thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms may disrupt daily life and pose risks to safety. Authorities are urging people to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this spell of unstable weather.
