Delhi Tomato Prices Surge To ₹90/Kg Due To Monsoon Rains And Supply Shortages

Tomato prices in Delhi have surged to ₹90 per kg due to the impact of monsoon rains in various states across the country, affecting supplies.

The rates have also increased in the major wholesale vegetable markets of Delhi, including Azadpur Mandi, Ghazipur Mandi, and Okhla Sabzi Mandi.

Disappointment over the rising prices has been expressed by residents, with one noting, as per news agency PTI, "Tomatoes were purchased for ₹28 per kg just a few days ago, but now they are selling for ₹90 per kg both online and in the local market. Vegetables have become costlier."

It was reported by Sanjay Bhagat, a wholesale vegetable vendor in Azadpur Mandi, to PTI that the rates have soared to ₹50 per kg even in wholesale markets due to the rains.

This surge is attributed to a decrease in the supply of tomatoes over the past week. The number of trucks ferrying these farm produce from states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Himachal has decreased because heavy rains have affected transportation.

In the last week, tomato rates have spiked to ₹60-70 in the wholesale markets, according to a vendor at Ghazipur Sabzi Mandi. Another vendor cited crop damage as the reason for the increase in tomato prices. As tomatoes do not have a long shelf life and rot quickly, supplies have been further affected by the rains, leading to a rise in prices.
