Delhi Fire Tragedy: 21 Dead, More Than 40 Rescued as Blaze Tears Through Malviya Nagar Hotels

At least 21 people were killed and more than 40 others were rescued after a devastating fire broke out in Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning. The blaze, which began in the basement restaurant of Flourish Stay hotel, rapidly spread through the building and extended to the neighbouring Micasa Inn, triggering a major rescue operation in one of South Delhi's densely populated residential areas.

The fire started around 8.50 am in the Hauz Rani locality of Malviya Nagar. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call, with firefighters battling flames that engulfed portions of the five-storey structure and adjacent premises.

Massive Rescue Operation Launched

According to officials, more than 40 people were rescued from the affected buildings as firefighters and police personnel carried out extensive evacuation efforts. Several occupants were trapped inside as smoke spread through multiple floors, prompting emergency teams to conduct room-by-room searches.

Authorities deployed two water engines, two water bowsers, a quick-response vehicle and additional firefighting units to contain the blaze. Ambulances were also stationed at the site to transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

Officials said rescue operations continued even after the fire was brought under control, as teams searched for any remaining occupants and assessed the extent of structural damage.

Fire Originated In Hotel Basement Restaurant

Preliminary information suggests the fire originated in the restaurant located in the basement of Flourish Stay hotel. The flames quickly intensified and spread upward through the building before reaching the neighbouring Micasa Inn.

The area where the incident occurred is known for its concentration of paying guest accommodations, hotels and rental properties catering to students and young professionals. Thick smoke and the rapid spread of the fire complicated rescue efforts during the morning hours.

Another Major Emergency After Mukundpur Collapse

The Malviya Nagar tragedy comes just a day after another serious incident in Delhi, where 10 people were injured following a suspected LPG cylinder explosion that led to the collapse of a building in Mukundpur.

Fire officials had received a distress call regarding that incident on Tuesday morning and deployed multiple rescue teams. Preliminary findings indicated that a cylinder blast may have triggered the collapse of a structure reportedly being used as a utensil polishing unit.

With two major emergencies unfolding within 48 hours, attention has once again turned to safety enforcement in Delhi's residential and commercial establishments as authorities investigate the causes behind both incidents.
