Delhi Rain Alert: Heavy Showers Cause Waterlogging, Traffic Disruption; More Downpour Predicted

Early morning rain on Thursday, September 12, led to significant waterlogging in several parts of Delhi, severely affecting traffic movement.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city, cautioning residents about major traffic disruptions.

Delhi Heavy Rains Cause Waterlogging

The IMD forecasted moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds throughout the day, with a generally cloudy sky expected to persist.

Weather Conditions and Temperature

The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi were recorded at 26.81°C and 23°C respectively, both below the usual norms for this time of the year.

An IMD official had predicted that the maximum temperature might hover closer to 30°C. The drop in temperature provided some relief from the usual heat, but the rain added to the city's commuting challenges.

Affected Areas

Early morning rainfall was reported in areas such as Green Park, Indira Gandhi International Airport, South Extension, and Minto Bridge, causing waterlogging.

On Rohtak Road, water accumulation led to traffic jams on the carriageway between Nangloi and Tikri Border in both directions. The Delhi Traffic Police advised commuters to avoid the Mundka area and take alternative routes to ease congestion.

This weather event followed a similar day on Wednesday, when moderate rain caused waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. The IMD has warned of continued traffic disruptions, potential issues with electricity, and the risk of damage to vulnerable structures due to the persistent rain.

Rainfall Measurements

In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM on Wednesday, Delhi recorded 6 mm of rainfall, followed by an additional 2.4 mm between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM the same day. The cumulative rainfall worsened waterlogging conditions, making several roads impassable and impacting daily commuters.

According to the IMD, the weather is expected to ease up on September 13, with light rains forecasted, and conditions will gradually improve by September 15.

Impact on Neighboring States

The weather in Delhi is part of a larger system impacting northern India. Due to a depression over Madhya Pradesh, Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and its surrounding districts have been experiencing heavy rainfall.

The IMD has issued a red alert for Mathura, signaling extremely heavy rainfall, and an orange alert for several nearby districts. The situation in these areas could lead to flooding, further impacting infrastructure and daily life.
