Delhi Polls: FIR Against CM Atishi For Violating Code Of Conduct, AAP Rejects Allegations
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi found herself embroiled in controversy when a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged against her for allegedly breaching the model code of conduct by using a government vehicle for electioneering purposes, according to Delhi Police. This incident unfolded with the backdrop of the upcoming Assembly elections, drawing scrutiny over the misuse of state resources for political gain. The complaint specifically accused Atishi of deploying a Public Works Department (PWD) vehicle to distribute election campaign materials to the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) election office post the announcement of the Delhi election on January 7.

Despite the allegations, the AAP refuted the existence of such an FIR, standing firm in their denial of the charges. The situation escalated when Arvind Kejriwal, a prominent figure in the AAP, took to social media platform X to vocalize his criticism against the selective enforcement of legal actions. He contrasted the immediate FIR against Atishi with the impunity enjoyed by other parties, claiming, "their leaders openly distribute money, sarees, blankets, and gold chains and get fake votes made, yet not even an FIR is registered." Kejriwal's remarks underscored a broader fight against a "rotten system" he alleges both the BJP and Congress are a part of, emphasizing the need for systemic change.
Legal and Electoral Ramifications
The legal complaint emerged from the efforts of a Kalkaji resident, KS Duggal, who took his concerns to the Govindpuri SHO. The seriousness of the allegations prompted the returning officer to demand swift action against Sanjay Kumar, the South-East Divisional Executive Engineer, implicating further misuse of official positions in the electoral process. This incident throws light on the complexities surrounding electoral integrity and the enforcement of the model code of conduct in a politically charged environment.
At the center of this controversy, Atishi, the MLA from Kalkaji and a key figure in the AAP, was gearing up to contest the elections from the same constituency, showcasing the high stakes involved. Her political journey saw a momentary pause when she aimed to file her nomination for the Kalkaji Assembly constituency but was delayed. Accompanied by Manish Sisodia, a senior AAP leader, Atishi participated in a roadshow that began with prayers at a gurudwara in Giri Nagar. However, the schedule did not go as planned, leading to an incomplete nomination process due to delays during the roadshow.
The chief minister, along with AAP leaders including Kejriwal, opted for a strategic shift to engage with Election Commission officials at a 3 pm meeting instead of completing the nomination process. This decision highlights the political strategy and the challenges faced by party members in navigating the electoral landscape amidst legal and bureaucratic hurdles.
In response to Atishi's candidature, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Ramesh Bidhuri, a seasoned leader and former Member of Parliament, to represent Kalkaji. This move sets the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in one of Delhi's high-profile constituencies, underscoring the competitive nature of the political field.
