Delhi Police Arrests 4 Accused In Metro Cable Theft Case

The Delhi Police on Wednesday apprehended four individuals from a group of 11 involved in a cable theft incident on the Delhi Metro. The police scrutinised over 500 CCTV clips, identifying two vehicles-a Tata Ace and a Honda Amaze-linked to the crime. "We followed the vehicles and arrested four members of a gang of 11. We have recovered 52 metres of the stolen cable from them. Further investigation is on," an official stated.

Earlier this month, on December 5, authorities registered a case concerning the theft of more than 140 metres of signalling cables between Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations on the Blue Line. A senior officer mentioned that charges were filed under sections 303(2) for theft and 329(3) for criminal trespass as per BNS, along with section 74 of the MRC Act at Rajouri Garden Metro police station.

Impact on Commuters

The Blue Line, one of Delhi Metro's busiest routes, connects Dwarka with Vaishali and Noida City Centre. On December 5, around 6 am, DMRC's signalling controller reported the theft to police. This incident led to reduced train speeds between Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations, dropping from 70 kmph to just 25-30 kmph during morning hours. Normal services resumed at 1:38 pm after repairs.

Earlier this year, Delhi Police advised DMRC to enhance security measures across metro premises. Recommendations included installing more CCTV cameras along tracks, improving lighting in dark areas, trimming tree branches near station boundaries, increasing guard numbers at platforms, and adding platform screen doors (PSD). Reports indicate over 200 cable theft incidents have occurred in the past four years.

The frequent cable thefts have prompted authorities to suggest several preventive measures to DMRC. These include enhancing surveillance through additional CCTV cameras on tracks and improving lighting in poorly lit areas. Increasing security personnel at platforms and installing platform screen doors are also part of these recommendations.
