Delhi Assembly Polls: Manish Sisodia’s Strategic Shift – Anti-Incumbency or Political Masterstroke?

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia has decided to contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections from Jangpura instead of his traditional Patparganj seat. This shift was confirmed with the release of AAP's second list of 20 candidates on December 9.

Sisodia, who has represented Patparganj since 2013 and served as Delhi's former deputy chief minister, will not be contesting from his old seat. Instead, UPSC coach and motivational speaker Avadh Ojha, who recently joined AAP, will contest from Patparganj.

Why Did Sisodia Shift Seats?

Sisodia's decision to shift from Patparganj comes after three consecutive wins in 2013, 2015, and 2020. However, his last victory in 2020 was a narrow one, as he faced tough competition from BJP's Ravinder Singh Negi, winning by just 3,200 votes. In comparison, Sisodia had won the seat by 28,700 votes in 2015 and 11,500 votes in 2013.

While Patparganj could have been Sisodia's first choice, the growing threat of anti-incumbency, his ongoing legal troubles-especially in connection with the Delhi excise policy case-and the aggressive stance of the opposition have likely played a role in his seat change.

Sisodia had spent 17 months in jail before being granted bail in August, which may have affected his prospects in Patparganj. This move could also be part of AAP's broader strategy to counter anti-incumbency sentiments following two successful terms in power.

'Patparganj - The Origin of My Political Journey'

In a letter to AAP volunteers from Patparganj, Sisodia explained that his decision to vacate the seat was influenced by Ojha's dedication to education. He described Patparganj as the symbol of a new political revolution focused on education, which he pioneered.

Sisodia further shared that Ojha had expressed his desire to start his political journey from Patparganj, which led to Sisodia's decision to give up the seat. "It wasn't just about vacating a seat; it was about supporting a leap forward in the country's education sector," he added.

Jangpura - A Safe Bet for AAP?

Jangpura, which has a majority Sikh-Punjabi population, is considered a 'safe' seat for AAP. It's expected that the support from the Dalit-Muslim community will help Sisodia secure a comfortable win. The seat was first won by AAP's Maninder Singh Dhir in 2013, but Dhir joined the BJP ahead of the 2025 elections. In 2015 and 2020, AAP's Praveen Kumar secured the seat, and he expressed his support for Sisodia after his candidacy was announced.

"AAP will ensure a massive victory for Manishji in Jangpura. I stand with him in this fight," Kumar wrote on X.

Notably, Chief Minister Atishi had also expressed interest in contesting from Jangpura in 2020, but she was fielded from Kalkaji, which she won. An AAP leader, speaking anonymously, stated that Sisodia's move was aimed at continuing his winning streak.

AAP's Bid for a Third Consecutive Term

AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is hoping to retain power in Delhi for a third consecutive term, following its victories in 2015 and 2020. In both of those elections, AAP won 67 and 63 seats, respectively, in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The party's first foray into Delhi politics came in 2013 when it emerged as the second-largest party and formed a government with Congress support. However, this government lasted only 49 days before Kejriwal resigned.

Sisodia's Appeal Tested in Jangpura

Sisodia's seat change is also seen as an effort to test his appeal beyond his stronghold of Patparganj. "Sisodia is the number two leader in AAP. This shift could be part of a strategic move to position the party for a strong electoral challenge," said a political analyst, who wished to remain unnamed.

The move has sparked reactions from both the BJP and Congress. The BJP criticized Sisodia as a 'fugitive,' suggesting his seat change was due to internal unrest within AAP. Congress, on the other hand, pointed to Sisodia's failure to address Patparganj's issues as the likely reason for his seat change.
