Raj Thackeray Challenges Freebie Politics: MNS Manifesto Takes a Different Route—See Details

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming assembly elections on Friday. According to the Hindustan Times report, the party has taken a different approach by avoiding any promises of sops or freebies, which are common in the manifestos of both the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliances.

Speaking at a press conference, MNS chief Raj Thackeray emphasised that their manifesto is practical and achievable. "Many parties have simply stated what they will do in their manifesto. We have released one that not only details our plans but also explains how we will implement them," he said. Although the MNS is not officially part of the Mahayuti alliance, there is an understanding between them on a few seats. Thackeray has already declared that the next chief minister will be from the BJP, and he plans to support the new government.

Addressing the possibility of joining the government, Thackeray said, "When it comes to joining the new government, I will question the ruling party on how they plan to implement our manifesto." He highlighted the need to reduce caste-based politics in Maharashtra and emphasised social unity.

The MNS manifesto focuses on providing quality education, childcare, employment, basic amenities, housing, and food security. It also addresses issues like solid waste management, open spaces, sewage treatment, environmental protection, and industrial and commercial policies. The party also aims to promote Marathi pride 'asmita,' the use of the Marathi language, the conservation of forts, and the encouragement of traditional sports.

When questioned about the promises and freebies offered by other parties like Congress, NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), BJP, and NCP, Raj Thackeray stressed the importance of financial feasibility. "I have no objection if women receive financial benefits. If the state can handle the cost of schemes like the Ladki Bahin scheme, then it is a gift. If not, it becomes a burden," he explained.

On the topic of Shiv Sena (UBT)'s promise to build a Shivaji temple in every tehsil, Thackeray disagreed, stating that educational institutions are a more pressing need than temples.

In a related development, Raj Thackeray announced the cancellation of his rally at Shivaji Park, scheduled for Sunday on the death anniversary of Bal Thackeray, due to the lack of permission. Shiv Sena (UBT) had also sought permission for a rally at the same venue and plans to gather there to pay tribute to its founder.
