NDA Partners Ramdas Athawale, Raj Thackeray Lock Horns Over 'Anti-Reservation' Ahead Of Maharashtra Elections

A day after Raj Thackeray's controversial 'anti-reservation' comments, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale criticised the MNS President. Athawale, a veteran Dalit leader and minister in Narendra Modi's cabinet, demanded Thackeray retract his remarks. He warned that Dalits and backward classes would boycott MNS candidates in the Maharashtra assembly elections if he didn't.

"If he doesn't withdraw his remarks, Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs should boycott MNS candidates in the Assembly polls," said Athawale. Thackeray had stated that locals should be prioritised for job opportunities without considering caste. He questioned the effectiveness of reservations in government jobs when private sector employment is growing.

Political Backlash

Thackeray's comments sparked backlash from various political figures. Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi founder Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, criticised Thackeray's understanding of reservation policies. Similarly, Shivba Sanghatana founder Manoj Jarange-Patil and OBC Sangharsh Sena chief Prof Laxman Hake also condemned his stance.

Thackeray's statement on Monday highlighted his belief that job opportunities should prioritise local residents over caste considerations. He argued that with the private sector creating more jobs, the impact of reservations in government jobs needs reevaluation.

Prakash Ambedkar questioned Thackeray's knowledge about reservation policies and their importance for marginalised communities. His criticism was echoed by other leaders who felt Thackeray's remarks were insensitive to the struggles of these groups.

Call for Boycott

Athawale's call for a boycott reflects the deep-rooted support for reservation among Dalits and backward classes. The minister emphasised that such remarks could alienate significant voter bases ahead of crucial elections.

The controversy underscores ongoing debates about reservation policies in India. While some argue for merit-based opportunities, others stress the need for affirmative action to uplift historically disadvantaged communities.

The upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections will likely see these issues play a significant role as political parties navigate voter sentiments on reservation and job opportunities.

As political tensions rise, it remains to be seen how Thackeray will respond to the mounting pressure from various leaders and communities demanding a retraction of his statements.
