Navi Mumbai International Airport Update: March 2025 Launch Date Confirmed With Rs 19,646 Crore Investment

The highly anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to commence operations by March 31, 2025. This marks the completion of its initial two phases, which have an estimated cost of Rs 19,646 crore. These phases will enable the airport to handle up to 20 million passengers annually and manage 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo per year.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol recently visited the airport site with Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation (Independent Charge) Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu. "Currently, about 65 per cent of the work is completed including one runway," said MoS Mohol. "The airport will be operational in March next year and it will further increase the connectivity for Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Pune and Western Maharashtra."

Future Expansion Plans

MoS Mohol outlined that the third phase, with a capacity to handle 30 million passengers annually, is expected to be operational by 2028-29. The fourth and fifth phases, each with a capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, are projected to be completed by 2033. Upon full completion of all phases, the airport will have two runways and four terminals, capable of handling up to 90 million passengers annually.

The airport's development follows the Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer (DBFOT) model with a concession period of 40 years. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is acting as the nodal agency for this project. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Maharashtra government, and Mumbai International Airports Ltd (MIAL) are collaborating on this public-private partnership.

Infrastructure And Connectivity

The NMIA will feature solar power plants generating 36 mega watt annually once fully completed. It will also boast multimodal connectivity through rail, road, metro, and eventually waterways. The airport connects Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 and Mumbai Metro Line 8 and serves as the starting point for the Mumbai-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridor.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been closely monitoring the project's progress since his visit last year. The CM's War Room has been actively reviewing various infrastructure projects in the state and preparing periodic reports on NMIA's development.

"The government is making all efforts to further strengthen the airport connectivity through road, metro rail, and suburban railways," said Chief Minister Shinde. He had anticipated that the first plane would take off in September this year.

Community Concerns

Addressing concerns from villagers whose lands were acquired for the airport project, MoS Mohol assured that their issues would be resolved through discussions with airport management. "They (villagers) will not be displaced but they will be paid due compensation," he stated.

The Centre is also considering naming the airport after noted leader D.B. Patil. This decision reflects ongoing efforts to honour local leaders while advancing infrastructure development in Maharashtra.

Former Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had previously confirmed that NMIA is on track to begin operations by March 2025. He highlighted that it would enhance connectivity through various transportation modes including railways and roads.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has already commissioned the 22 kilometres Mumbai Trans Harbour Link providing easy access from mainland Mumbai to NMIA.

This significant infrastructure project aims to boost regional connectivity and economic growth while addressing community concerns effectively.
