Mumbai's Gokhale Bridge Opening Faces Unexpected Delay - Here's What You Need To Know

The anticipated reopening of Gokhale Bridge to traffic by July 1 has been postponed due to ongoing traffic management works and tests, confirmed by the municipal authorities. The Mumbai municipality now aims to finalize these procedures within the next two days.

Why There Is A Delay?

Mumbai s Gokhale Bridge

1. Waiting For Safety Certificates
The recent developments focus on the completion of critical connections between the Barfiwala and Gokhale flyovers, facilitated by hydraulic jacks and MS stool packing to enable east-west travel. Subsequent assessments including Non-Destructive and Load Tests were conducted to ensure structural integrity. Veermata Jijabai Technology Institute (VJTI) subsequently certified the safety of the route.

Despite missing the initial deadlines, municipal efforts remain on track under the supervision of technical consultants overseeing the Barfiwala flyover connection. The project has involved meticulous planning over the past two months, operating around the clock to meet stringent timelines.

2. Waiting For Load Testing Results
A crucial 14-day period for concrete curing was observed, utilizing advanced concrete technologies alongside jointing work. Following completion, the bridge underwent rigorous load testing to validate readiness for traffic, adhering to phased reopening protocols.

Collaboration with VJTI and IIT Mumbai has been instrumental in planning and executing the Barfiwala bridge alignment, further affirmed by VJTI's structural safety endorsement. With the removal of jack supports, the Barfiwala bridge now stands independently on its pillars, ensuring robust stability.

When Will Gokhale Bridge Be Open To the Public?

Temporary restrictions continue to limit access to Barfiwala and Gokhale bridges to light vehicles only, with height barriers in place for heavy vehicles. Future phases will expand access to heavy vehicles upon completion of ongoing works within the railway zone.

Looking ahead, a new route from Juhu to Andheri East is set to open from 5 PM on July 4, easing east-west commute options for residents and commuters alike.
