Mumbai Weather Update: Temperature Drops Nearly 10°C After Heatwaves, Brings Much-Needed Relief

After facing three consecutive heatwaves, Mumbai and its surrounding metropolitan region have finally experienced a noticeable drop in temperature. Over the past few days, the mercury has fallen by nearly 10°C, offering much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity.

The cooler weather has come as a welcome change for residents who had been struggling with unusually high temperatures for early March.

What Caused the Sudden Weather Change?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the change in weather is due to an upper air cyclonic circulation that developed over Madhya Pradesh and is now extending across Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra.

This system has brought:

• Strong winds
• Cloudy conditions
• Light rain-like weather patterns

Together, these factors have helped bring down temperatures across Mumbai and nearby areas.

Temperature Falls Below Normal

Weather observations show a clear dip in temperatures across the city:

• Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 30.7°C, which is 1.4°C below normal
• Colaba observatory recorded 32.4°C, about 2°C below normal

This drop is significant, especially after the recent heatwave conditions.

Rain Alert Issued, But No Showers Yet

The IMD had issued an orange alert for several districts in Maharashtra, warning of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Mumbai and nearby regions were also expected to receive light showers.

However, while rainfall did not occur in the city, the shift in weather patterns still helped cool down the atmosphere.

Weather Forecast for Coming Days

The forecast for Mumbai over the next 24 hours suggests:

• Maximum temperature around 31°C
• Minimum temperature around 22°C

There may be a slight further drop in temperature before it gradually starts rising again in the coming days.

Unusual Heatwave Pattern This March

This March has been unusual for Mumbai and the North Konkan region, which includes the city and nearby districts. The region experienced three heatwaves in the first half of the month, something rarely seen in the past.

According to the IMD's seasonal outlook, more heatwaves are expected in April and May, indicating that the current relief may only be temporary.

The recent drop in temperature has provided a short break from extreme weather in Mumbai, but experts warn that hotter days are likely ahead. For now, residents can enjoy the cooler conditions while staying prepared for rising temperatures in the weeks to come.
