Mumbai Viral Video: Elderly Woman Hurt by Falling Barricade; BMC Says They Will Look Into Incident

A disturbing video has gone viral on social media, showing an elderly woman being struck by a falling metal barricade in Mumbai's Andheri West area. The incident, captured on CCTV footage from Marve Road, highlights the dangers pedestrians face near roadwork sites, especially during bad weather.

Viral Video Captures Moment Of Accident

Mumbai Viral Video

In the video, the elderly woman can be seen walking along the roadside amid strong winds. Suddenly, two metal barricades collapse, with one landing directly on her leg. The impact causes her to fall to the ground, visibly injured and unable to stand. Passersby quickly rush to help, lifting the heavy barricade and offering assistance. A small crowd gathers around the woman, who remains seated on the road. Although her injuries have not been officially confirmed, reports suggest she suffered a serious injury and required major surgery.

The video was first shared on X, formerly Twitter by a user named SaferRoadsSquad, who tagged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and its roads department. In the post, the user urged BMC to ensure safer barricading practices at roadwork sites to protect pedestrians. The post read, "Recent incident in Andheri-W: Senior citizen injured by falling barricades, needed major surgery. @mybmc @mybmcRoads Ensure proper barricading on Marve Rd to protect pedestrians from dug-up roads & also vehicles. Safety first!"

BMC Responds

The BMC's Infrastructure Department responded to the post, asking for the exact location to assist further. However, no official statement has been released regarding the woman's condition or the medical treatment she received. As of now, there has been no confirmed update on her health.

Gusty Weather Conditions

The incident occurred during a period of severe weather in Mumbai. On April 4, the city and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) experienced gusty winds and thunderstorms, which affected several parts of the city. The strong winds were also responsible for disruptions on the Central Railway line, particularly between Atgaon and Thansit stations, where a foreign object became entangled in overhead wires, briefly halting train services.

A Call for Better Safety Measures

This incident has sparked a conversation about the need for stronger safety measures at roadwork sites in Mumbai, especially in unpredictable weather conditions. Many social media users have called for better barricading and precautions to prevent such accidents from happening again in the future. The viral video serves as a reminder of the importance of pedestrian safety in urban areas, particularly where roadworks are ongoing.
