Mumbai’s Power Future: Major Transmission Line Set To Energise City With 2,000 MW

In a significant development for Mumbai's power infrastructure, a new transmission line along the 90-kilometre Padgha-Kharghar energy corridor is set to go live by August 26-27, according to Hindustan Times. This new line will add 2,000 megawatts (MW) to the region's electric grid, providing a substantial boost to meet the city's growing energy needs.

Relief During High-Demand Periods

Mumbai s Power Future Major Transmission Line Set To Energise City With 2 000 MW

The 400 kV Padgha-Kharghar transmission line is anticipated to alleviate the pressure on Mumbai's power supply, particularly during the peak demand periods in summer and October. This year, the city's power demand exceeded 4,100 MW, highlighting the urgent need for additional capacity.

The new power line is crucial for supporting the Rs 81,137 crore worth of infrastructure projects recently approved by the Maharashtra government. These projects include extensive developments that will further increase the demand for electricity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Construction Techniques

The construction of the 90 km power line involved overcoming significant geographical challenges, including 30 kilometres of forest land and 20 kilometres of hilly terrain. To streamline the process, Mumbai Urja Marg Transmission (MUMT) employed helicopters for the first time to transport materials. This approach, which carried 5-10 tonnes of material per helicopter sortie, helped avoid the need for road construction that would have caused additional environmental disruption.

MUMT officials noted in HT that, "During good weather, we were able to perform up to 50 helicopter sorties for transporting materials, cement, metal, and personnel to the construction site. This method not only expedited the project but also reduced the environmental impact by preventing the need to cut down more trees."

Environmental Impact

The construction path of the transmission line required the cutting or trimming of approximately 20,000 trees across several areas, including Panvel, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Ambernath, and Bhiwandi. MUMT has compensated the government for the loss of tree cover in forested areas and provided over Rs 400 crore in compensation to around 10,728 farmers who allowed their land to be used for the right of way.

Project Timeline And Costs

The project, which received clearance during the pandemic in 2020, gained momentum only in January 2023 and was completed in 16 months. The initial budget of Rs 900 crore was later revised to Rs 1,140 crore due to various factors.

Future Demand

With peak power demand in MMR reaching 4,500 MW this summer, the new transmission line will be crucial in addressing the expected increase in electricity needs. Upcoming developments such as the New Town Development Authority's 323 square kilometre expansion, proposed data centres, Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), and metro rail corridors are likely to further drive up demand for electricity in the region.
