Mumbai's chief fire officer succumbs to burns
Mumbai, May 24: Mumbai Fire Brigade's chief fire officer Sunil Nesarikar died today while undergoing treatment for the severe burns he suffered during a blaze at a four-storeyed building at Kalbadevi here on May 9.
Nesarikar is the fourth senior official the department has lost after the Kalbadevi blaze. His condition started deteriorating since last evening and he succumbed to injuries, an official from Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) said.
He was undergoing treatment at the National Burns Centre in Airoli in Navi Mumbai.
Nesarikar passed away due to multi-organ failure after sustaining 50 per cent third degree burns with acute inhalation lung injury, a hospital official said.
Deputy chief fire officer Sudhir Amin, who had suffered 90 per cent burns during the fire-fighting operation at the Gokul Niwas building in Kalbadevi, passed away 10 days ago.
The Kalbadevi fire had also claimed the lives of assistant divisional fire officer S W Rane and station officer MN Desai on May 9.
