Mumbai-Pune Expressway Gets Smarter: AI Cameras To Monitor And Penalize Violators
Violators of traffic rules on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will now face fines as the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) becomes operational, according to Lokmat. This advanced system employs artificial intelligence (AI) cameras and radar devices to monitor and enforce 17 different types of traffic violations, ensuring immediate penal action.
A command control system and data centre have been established at Kusgaon in Lonavala to manage the ITMS. Additionally, an inspection centre will soon be set up at the Borghat check post area. The construction of the Highway Traffic Management System is also underway at the toll booths in Talegaon and Khalapur, with operations expected to commence by October 2024.

The AI cameras will monitor various violations, including:
1. Overspeeding
2. Not using seat belts
3. Parking cars on highways and in tunnels
4. Riding two-wheelers on highways
5. Breaking lane rules
6. Driving while talking on mobile phones
7. Vehicles without taillight reflectors
8. Using unauthorized number plates
9. Transporting goods beyond capacity
According to Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the ITMS will significantly contribute to reducing accidents and ensuring adherence to traffic regulations.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has seen numerous accidents due to speeding, resulting in fatalities and injuries. In response, the MSRDC has implemented the ITMS to create a safer driving environment. Cameras installed along the highway will monitor traffic continuously, and fines for violations will be directly sent to the mobile phones of vehicle owners.
