Mumbai Local Train Services News: 12 Rail Projects To Unlock New Routes And Relieve Congestion

Mumbai is witnessing a significant transformation in its railway infrastructure with 12 major projects currently underway. According to Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, these projects are progressing rapidly and are expected to be operational soon.

The primary goal of these developments is to provide passengers with faster and more efficient transportation options. For instance, the Parel to Kurla project involves the addition of two new railway lines, which is expected to significantly reduce congestion on Mumbai local trains.

Several of these projects are designed to connect previously untapped areas within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). A prime example is the Panvel-Karjat rail line, which aims to link Navi Mumbai with the Raigad district, thereby improving connectivity in the region.

An Overview Of The 12 Major Projects By The Ministry

1. Parel to Kurla New Railway Lines

The construction of two new 5th and 6th railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla is underway. These lines will enhance local train services by segregating local and long-distance trains. Phase 1 of this 10-kilometre stretch is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

2. Mumbai Central to Borivali

The sixth rail line between Mumbai Central and Borivali is another critical project. The 8.9 kilometres stretch between Mahalaxmi and Goregaon has already been completed and commissioned. Work on the remaining Goregaon to Borivali section is progressing swiftly.

3. Goregaon to Borivali Harbour Line

Plans are in place to extend the Harbour Line from Goregaon to Borivali, which will help decongest the Andheri to Borivali section. Land acquisition for this project is currently in progress.

4. Borivali to Virar on the Borivali-Palghar Fast Corridor

The construction of the 5th and 6th rail lines between Borivali and Virar is underway, which will reserve the Borivali to Palghar fast corridor exclusively for suburban trains. This project is expected to alleviate stress on the fast corridor, and utility shifting work is currently ongoing.

5. Quadrupling of Virar-Dahanu Road

The quadrupling of the Virar to Dahanu Road section is a crucial infrastructure project aimed at enhancing rail connectivity and reducing congestion in the region. Currently, earthwork and bridge construction are in progress.

6. Panvel to Karjat Rail Line

The Panvel-Karjat rail line, a new suburban corridor, is set to connect Navi Mumbai with the Raigad district, reaching previously untapped areas of the MMR. Tunnelling and bridge construction work for this project is currently ongoing.

7. Airoli to Kalwa Elevated Link

This 3.3 km long elevated link aims to provide seamless train connections between Vashi-Belapur and Kalyan. The first phase, including Dighagaon station, has been commissioned, and land acquisition is ongoing for the remaining sections.

8. Kalyan to Asangaon 4th Railway Line

The construction of a 4th railway line between Kalyan and Asangaon stations will boost local train connectivity in Mumbai, allowing for additional train services. Land acquisition for this project is currently in progress.

9. Kalyan to Badlapur Rail Line

The addition of a third and fourth rail line between Kalyan and Badlapur will increase the speed and frequency of local trains, catering to the growing demand in this section. Utility shifting, earthwork, and bridge construction are currently underway.

10. Kalyan to Kasara 3rd Rail Line

The completion of the Kalyan to Kasara 3rd rail line will reduce congestion on this busy suburban route and improve the mobility of trains. Phase 1, which covers Asangaon to Kasara, is expected to be completed by next year.

11. Mumbai Central, Dadar, and Bandra Terminus

Trains originating from Mumbai Central, Dadar, or Bandra Terminus and heading towards the Konkan Railway or southern India often face delays due to engine reversals at Vasai. To mitigate this, the Naigaon to Juichandra Double Chord Line is being constructed.

12. Nilaje to Kopar

A five-kilometre-long chord line between Nilaje and Kopar is being constructed, which will reduce train travel time between Vasai and Panvel by approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

These projects, once completed, are expected to provide much-needed relief to Mumbai's daily commuters by easing congestion and improving connectivity across the metropolitan region.
