Mumbai Grinds To Halt As Heavy Rain Causes Traffic Mayhem, Andheri Subway Inundated

Mumbai is experiencing major disruptions due to overnight and continuing morning rains. The downpour has brought the city to a standstill, affecting public transport services and causing inconvenience to commuters.

The IMD has issued warnings about potential flooding, particularly with the high tide at 11:28 am, when waves are expected to reach up to 4.24 meters.

Mumbai Rains Andheri Subway Inundated

Mumbai and Palghar are under a yellow alert, while Thane district faces a more severe orange alert, reported NDTV.

Rainfall measurements show that Mumbai's central region received 78 mm of rain, while eastern and western Mumbai recorded 57 mm and 67 mm, respectively.

The forecast indicates that moderate to heavy rains will continue, exacerbating current challenges.

Public transport services have been immensely impacted. Waterlogging on roads and railway tracks has caused suburban train services to run 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule.

Train movements on the Harbour line have slowed due to water accumulation at Chunabhatti, compounded by the high tide. The main line of the Central Railway faced additional delays due to a technical glitch in a train engine.

The Western Railway's suburban services are also running late by about 10 minutes.

The Andheri subway, a critical commuter link, was closed due to significant waterlogging but was reopened later in the day once the water subsided.

Heavy rain in Thane district since midnight has led to water accumulation at the Thane Vandana bus depot and the local market, disrupting daily activities.

In Nagpur, heavy rain warnings have led to the closure of schools across the district. While flight schedules at Nagpur airport remain unaffected, Bhiwandi city is experiencing critical conditions with water accumulation in several parts, including knee-deep water in the Teen Batti area of Sabzi Bazar.

Many low-lying areas are at risk of water entering homes and shops if the rains persist.
