Mumbai-Delhi Expressway Tunnel Collapse Claims Life, NHAI Fines Contractor Rs 50 Lakh
In a tragic incident on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, a part of an under-construction tunnel in Rajasthan's Kota collapsed, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to three others. The collapse, which occurred on Sunday, has prompted an immediate response from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The NHAI has taken decisive steps to address the accident, including the formation of an investigation team and the imposition of a significant fine on the project's contractor for failing to uphold safety standards, according to India Today.
The NHAI has announced a fine of Rs 50 lakh against the contractor responsible for the project, emphasizing the serious lapse in maintaining necessary safety measures. This action underscores the authority's commitment to worker safety and adherence to construction protocols. In response to the incident, NHAI has put together a committee to thoroughly investigate the cause of the tunnel collapse and to recommend strategies to prevent such accidents in the future. The committee comprises esteemed professionals including Retired Director General (Road Development) SK Nirmal, Additional Director General (Retired) of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways AK Shrivastava, and Alok Pandey from Elegant Engineering.

Investigative Measures And Safety Enhancements
Scheduled to visit the site on Monday, the appointed team aims to scrutinize the circumstances leading to the collapse. Their objective is to identify the root cause and propose measures that can be implemented to avert similar occurrences. This initiative demonstrates the authority's proactive approach to ensuring the structural integrity of its projects and the safety of its workforce.
Additionally, the NHAI has issued a show cause notice to the team leader of the authority engineer of ICT, along with Hexa Construction and Nokang Infra. The notice points out the safety oversights at their level, which contributed to the fatal accident. This step indicates the NHAI's intention to hold all parties involved accountable and to reinforce the importance of stringent safety measures.
In a statement, the authority expressed its dedication to preventing such incidents in the future. "We are committed to ensuring that such incidents are not repeated. Remedial measures and enhanced safety protocols will be implemented promptly," the NHAI asserted. This commitment to safety and the implementation of corrective actions reflects the authority's resolve to uphold the highest standards of construction safety and worker protection.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about construction safety standards on major infrastructure projects in India. It serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols and regulations to protect workers. The NHAI's actions following the collapse indicate a robust response to address safety lapses and to ensure such tragedies are not repeated in the future.
