Metro Lines 2B And 9 Under Inspection—Check The Full Route Before December Launch
Mumbai's long-awaited Metro Lines 2B and 9 have moved a step closer to becoming operational, with the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) initiating final safety inspections this week. These inspections are the last critical hurdle before the lines can be officially opened for public use and include comprehensive checks of track infrastructure, signalling systems, rolling stock, and overall safety protocols.
Metro Line 2B (Yellow Line) - Phase 1 Nearing Completion
The first phase of Metro Line 2B covers a 5.39-km stretch from Mandale to Diamond Garden, with five stations-Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. This section has already completed trial runs and is now under CMRS scrutiny.

According to officials, commercial operations are expected to begin by December 2025, contingent on receiving final clearances from CMRS and other statutory bodies. Once operational, the Yellow Line will be the first metro service to connect Mumbai's eastern suburbs in over a decade, improving access between areas like Chembur, Mankhurd, and the broader metro network.
Metro Line 9 (Red Line Extension) - Enhancing Western Suburb Connectivity
Simultaneously, the first phase of Metro Line 9, an extension of the Red Line, is also in the final inspection stage. This 4.4-km segment runs from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, including four stations: Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
Phase 1 of Line 9 is also targeting a December 2025 launch, with the second phase-completing the remaining stations-slated for December 2026. Once fully operational, the line will link Mira-Bhayander with Andheri, providing a crucial transit corridor that connects with Metro Lines 2A and 7, significantly easing traffic in the western suburbs.
Final Approvals Pending
While the lines are progressing steadily, a number of certifications-including those related to electrical, fire safety, and overall infrastructure readiness-are still pending. These approvals must be secured before the CMRS gives the green light for commercial operations.
Authorities have confirmed that a phased commissioning approach will be adopted. This means that once any segment is fully cleared, it will begin operations independently, offering partial relief to commuters affected by construction-related traffic snarls.
A Step Closer to a More Connected Mumbai
With CMRS inspections now underway, Mumbai is on track to expand its metro footprint further. Phase 1 of both Metro Lines 2B and 9 remains on schedule for a December 2025 launch, bringing improved connectivity and reduced commute times to the city's eastern and western corridors.
