Mumbai Lakes Water Level

On Friday morning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that the water levels in Mumbai's seven reservoirs, which supply drinking water to the city, have reached 98.55 per cent of their total capacity.

According to the latest data from the BMC, the combined water stock of the Mumbai lakes stands at 14,26,326 million litres. Mumbai receives its water from several sources, including the Upper and Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tansa, Vihar, Tulsi, and Modak Sagar lakes.

As per the civic body's report, the water levels in individual lakes are as follows: Tansa Lake is at 97.51 per cent, Modak Sagar at 97.24 per cent, Middle Vaitarna at 98.52 per cent, Upper Vaitarna at 99.15 per cent, Bhatsa at 98.74 per cent, Vihar is full at 100 per cent, and Tulsi Lake is at 99.66 per cent.

The recent heavy rains have caused significant changes in water levels. Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, while Vihar and Modak Sagar started to overflow on July 25. On July 24, Tansa Lake began to overflow around 4 PM, which led to a substantial increase in the water stored in all seven reservoirs, extending the water supply by 17 days in just one day.

Tansa Lake, located in the Shahpur region of Thane, supplies approximately 400 million gallons of water to Mumbai. It overflowed on July 26, 2024. Additionally, Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that directly supply water to the BMC, started overflowing on July 20 at around 8:30 AM. This event mirrored a similar occurrence on the same day last year at 1:28 PM.

The BMC continues to monitor the water levels closely and assures residents of a stable water supply amid the ongoing rains.
