“Hekdi Nikal Dunga”: Pappu Yadav Challenges Raj Thackeray’s Marathi Pride Push

Outspoken Bihar MP Pappu Yadav has issued a bold challenge to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray amidst the growing controversy over the Marathi language debate in Mumbai. In a sharply worded statement, Yadav declared, "Mumbai aakar saari hekdi nikal dunga" ("I will come to Mumbai and strip away all this arrogance"), taking direct aim at Thackeray's recent pro-Marathi rhetoric.

The language row began after the Maharashtra government's decision-later rolled back-to make Hindi a mandatory third language in primary schools. The policy was met with strong resistance from key Marathi leaders like Raj and Uddhav Thackeray, who saw it as a threat to Marathi linguistic and cultural identity.

Raj Thackeray has consistently championed the promotion of Marathi in Mumbai and has made statements that critics have labeled as exclusionary towards non-Marathi speaking communities, particularly migrants from northern states.

Pappu Yadav, criticizing this stance, described it as divisive and contrary to the inclusive spirit of Mumbai. He asserted that Mumbai belongs to all Indians and warned against efforts to intimidate or marginalize migrant communities. He emphasized his willingness to directly confront such actions, declaring he would personally travel to Mumbai to push back against what he described as arrogance.

Yadav's remarks have found support among many migrant communities in Mumbai, especially those from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, who have often felt targeted by the MNS's aggressive campaigns.

The statement has triggered a new wave of political sparring in Maharashtra. MNS leaders have dismissed Yadav's comments as an attempt to gain attention, while opposition parties have appealed for calm, urging all leaders to avoid provocative language that could disrupt social harmony in the city.

Pappu Yadav's challenge comes just ahead of the high-profile "Awaj Marathicha" rally, which will see Raj and Uddhav Thackeray sharing a stage for the first time in nearly two decades. The controversy adds further intensity to the ongoing debate over language, identity, and inclusivity in Mumbai-raising questions about who gets to define the city's cultural and political character in the lead-up to crucial elections.
