Close to 1,500 vendors have already arrived at the facility, with an expected additional 500 vendors, along with up to 2 lakh goats and 12,000 buffaloes, slated to arrive in the days leading up to Eid-ul-Adha, scheduled for June 17. Festivities at Deonar Abbatoir, spanning over 15 days, see vendors arriving for sale twelve days before Bakri Eid, and remaining for a few days after the festival, as reported by Indian Express.

In these 15 days, between 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh goats and 12,000 to 15,000 buffaloes are cumulatively brought to the slaughterhouse for sale, as reported by officials. To ensure smooth operations over the next week, over 1,000 civic workers from various departments, including the health department and Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), have been deployed at the Deonar facility.

Throughout the 15-day event, the abbatoir generates over 7,500 metric tonnes of waste, which is cleared by 300 workers, five pick-up vans, two JCBs, and four dumpers. A temporary facility covering 77,850 square meters has been erected within the abbatoir compound for sheltering animals, complemented by two health facilities for their treatment, as reported by Indian Express.

Ear tagging of goats, a significant challenge faced by the department, has been noted, with 1,500 vendors having arrived at the facility for sale so far. For vendors intending to slaughter animals, the civic body has implemented an online appointment booking system, as per media reports.

This year, several provisions have been made, including the installation of 210 cameras, CCTV systems, 5 PTZ cameras, and a control room where officers will monitor the situation. A slot booking process has also been planned to avoid crowding and confusion, enabling vendors to schedule appointments for slaughtering their animals during Eid, as disclosed by a senior official to The Indian Express.
