As BMC Elections Near, Raj Thackeray Warns Followers: “Don’t Be Careless, Mumbai Is at Stake”

Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has urged vigilance as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections approach. Describing it as the "last election" for Marathi people, Thackeray warned his followers to be cautious. At the Konkan Mahotsav inauguration, he highlighted the tense political climate surrounding the civic polls, emphasizing the importance of awareness. "For the Marathi people, this BMC election will be the last crucial election," he said. "If we remain careless, consider it gone from our hands." He added that "if Mumbai slips out of our hands, these people will create havoc."

Thackeray also expressed worries about possible voter list discrepancies, urging vigilance over voter authenticity. He criticised the Election Commission for their handling of voter rolls. This assertiveness follows MNS's setback in the recent state polls, after initially supporting the Mahayuti alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The political tone and positioning of Thackeray and his party have notably shifted since then.

MNS and BJP's Diverging Campaigns

While the MNS and Shiv Sena (UBT) emphasize Marathi identity, the BJP focuses on a strong Hindutva message. The BJP, often viewed as representing non-Marathi communities, now prioritizes Hindu identity over linguistic identity in its campaign. Mumbai MLA Ameet Satam and others have sharpened their rhetoric, with minister Ashish Shelar stating, "Mumbai's mayor will be a Hindu" when asked about the next mayor's identity.

As these narratives develop, the newfound closeness between Raj Thackeray and his cousin Uddhav Thackeray, chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), has become notable. Formerly political rivals, the cousins now show alignment in both family and political matters, signaling a significant shift in state politics.

Opposition's Dilemma Over Alliance

The push for a united Marathi front faces challenges within the Opposition. The Congress remains hesitant to include MNS in the Maha Vikas Aghadi, with Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad emphasizing alliances only with constitutionally aligned groups. In contrast, the NCP, led by Sharad Pawar, appears more open to collaboration, recognizing potential gains in rallying Marathi voters in Mumbai and nearby areas.

Amid these political dynamics, the focus remains on the impending BMC elections, with various parties maneuvering to secure voter support. The upcoming elections promise to be a pivotal moment for the Marathi community and the broader political landscape of Mumbai.
