Ahead of 2024 Elections, Vaijapur’s Ramesh Boranare Strengthens Shiv Sena's Regional Hold
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district has emerged as a pivotal player in Maharashtra's political arena, marked by a significant influx of elected representatives from the Shiv Sena. This surge is particularly driven by the rise of youth organizations within the party, motivating hundreds of young individuals-many of whom are politically inexperienced-to actively engage in public development efforts. Among the notable newcomers making waves is Professor Ramesh Boranare, a representative from Vaijapur, who has remarkably navigated the complexities of Maharashtra's state politics.

Boranare's political journey began in 2017 when he successfully clinched a seat in the Zilla Parishad elections, propelling him to the district council. Just two years later, he received a ticket to contest the Assembly elections from Vaijapur, achieving victory on his first attempt. Since then, the political landscape in Maharashtra has been tumultuous, particularly with the alliance between the Shiv Sena and the BJP ahead of the elections.
The electorate responded robustly, granting the Mahayuti (grand alliance) a mandate with 163 seats. However, on election results day, the Shiv Sena took a divergent stance, drastically altering political dynamics. Devendra Fadnavis's attempts to contact Uddhav Thackeray went unanswered, leading to negotiations with Congress and NCP. This ultimately resulted in the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition coming to power.
The following years saw an intense conflict between the Shiv Sena and the BJP, particularly within the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, where the BJP found itself in opposition. After the formation of the Shiv Sena-Congress alliance, the BJP's claim to the position of Leader of the Opposition in the municipal corporation was denied, resulting in a Congress member assuming that role. The tensions escalated, with various leaders facing imprisonment amid corruption allegations, placing several Shiv Sena leaders under investigation. Despite internal pressures on Uddhav Thackeray to dissolve the Maha Vikas Aghadi, he chose to withstand these challenges.
In 2022, Eknath Shinde rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray, garnering support from 40 MLAs and eight ministers. This rebellion led to Shinde acquiring the party, its symbol, and even the chief ministership, with Boranare among the supporters.
Supporting Eknath Shinde was not without its challenges for Boranare, who faced backlash from party workers loyal to Uddhav Thackeray. Nevertheless, he asserted that his stance would be determined by the people, ultimately securing substantial funding for the development of Vaijapur from Shinde. The Lok Sabha elections became a litmus test for the MLAs supporting Shinde.
In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar constituency, a triangular contest emerged between Imtiaz Jalil of the AIMIM, Chandrakant Khaire of the Uddhav Thackeray faction, and Sandipan Bhumre of the Shiv Sena. Boranare's influence in Vaijapur helped Bhumre achieve an impressive 37,000-vote margin, solidifying Boranare's position.
During his initial term as an MLA, Ramesh Boranare initiated numerous development projects in Vaijapur. After the 2019 Assembly elections and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he focused on providing support and assurance to the public during challenging times. He established a 100-bed hospital in honor of Balasaheb Thackeray and donated eight ambulances to primary health centers.
Boranare played a crucial role in securing ₹23 crore in assistance for 42 out of the 53 ashrams in the Vaijapur-Gangapur Assembly constituency. He also contributed significantly to the establishment of the Ramrao Nana Theatre in Vaijapur, bringing in funding of ₹3.90 crore for the project, recently inaugurated by Uday Samant, the Industries Minister.
The operational challenges of the Panchganga Industrial Group's sugar factory in Vaijapur have been resolved through Boranare's efforts, allowing the factory to reopen for farmers. Additionally, he secured ₹4.40 crore for beautification projects, including a memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and 75 other memorials for various eminent personalities in rural areas.
As the 2024 Assembly elections approach, Eknath Shinde has reaffirmed his trust in Boranare by granting him a ticket. Following the Lok Sabha elections, where Boranare significantly contributed to Bhumre's 37,000-vote margin, he has demonstrated his stronghold over the constituency. His growing popularity is attributed to various development projects, government schemes, and his established influence in the region. Supporters are optimistic about his chances for re-election, reflecting the trust placed in his leadership.
