8 Zika Virus Cases Reported in Maharashtra, Union Health Ministry Issues Advisory
The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday issued an advisory to all states across the country to maintain a high level of vigilance in the wake of Zika virus cases reported in Maharashtra. So far, eight cases have been reported in Maharashtra, prompting concerns about the spread of the disease.
The advisory urges states to intensify screening of pregnant women for Zika virus infection and monitor the growth of foetuses of expecting mothers who have tested positive for the virus. This is a crucial measure to prevent any potential complications and ensure the health and well-being of both mothers and babies.

"As Zika is associated with microcephaly and neurological consequences in the foetus of the affected pregnant lady, states have been advised to alert the clinicians for close monitoring. States are urged to instruct the health facilities in the affected areas or those catering cases from affected areas to screen the pregnant women for Zika virus infection, monitor the growth of the foetus of expecting mothers who have tested positive for Zika," said the Ministry of Health and Welfare said in the advisory.
Dr. Naveen Kumar, Director of the National Institute of Virology, has reassured citizens not to panic over the Zika cases in Pune, where six out of 106 samples have tested positive for the virus. One case each has been reported from Ahmednagar and Kolhapur.
Zika virus is a vector-borne flavivirus transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The disease typically presents with mild symptoms such as fever, rash, and joint pain. However, it has garnered global attention due to reports linking it to microcephaly and serious neurological complications.
In a report published in the Journal of Infection, Dr. Sapkal highlighted the importance of vigilance and proactive measures to prevent the spread of Zika virus. As cases continue to emerge in India, it is crucial that citizens take necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites and report any suspected cases to the authorities immediately.
