Bareilly: Depressed Farmer self immolates, his wife too dies while saving him

Bareilly, April 23: There has been a lot of politicisation over the suicide case of Gajendra Singh, a Rajasthan-based farmer.

It's a bitter truth that the farmers of the country have suffered huge losses due to untimely rains, drought and hailstorm.

As per a report published in India Today, on April 21, Tuesday, 45-year-old Hans Giri, a farmer in Kashipur village of Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh ended his life due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm. [UP fixes Rs 1,500 as minimum amount for rain-hit farmers]

In an attempt to save her husband, Giri's wife Pushpa Devi also sustained severe injuries, but later she also succumbed in a hospital.

Giri, who was under depression, only had two bighas of land and he had taken six bighas land on rent from an another villager. [Centre 'anti-farmer', not giving due support to UP govt: SP]

Giri had spent Rs 50,000 on seeds and fertilisers and was expecting around 40 tonnes of wheat harvest, but the nature's fury brought it down to only 1.5 tonne.

He had to give two tonnes of grain to the owner of six bigha land, but he suffered massive crop damage. [BJP, SP spar over farmer woes in Uttar Pradesh]

The deceased couple is survived by four children.

On Wednesday, April 22, the Met department has issued a warning to farmers of Uttar Pradesh of a possible spell of rain on April 25-26.

Warning messages were being sent by the union agriculture ministry to farmers in places like Bareilly, Moradabad, Lucknow, Hardoi, Unnao, Sitapur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Varanasi, Allahabad, Mirzapur, Sonebhadra, Mau and Ballia -- places where rains are likely over the weekend.

In an another incident, a farmer in Rajkot, Gujarat attempted suicide during Krishi Mahotsav function, but he was detained by the police. [Fresh spell of rain predicted in UP, farmers alerted]
