Pattaya Fried Rice Recipe: Enjoy This Traditional Malaysian Dish Wrapped In Omelette

Pattaya Fried Rice, or nasi goreng pattaya, is a delightful Malaysian dish. It features chicken fried rice wrapped in an omelette pouch. This dish is similar to the Japanese omurice. It offers a unique blend of flavours and textures, making it a popular choice for many. The preparation time is around 20 minutes, and it serves three people.

  • 3 tbsp olive oil (2 tbsp for frying and 1 tbsp for making an omelette)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 red chillies, diced (1 cm)
  • 2 shallots, sliced finely
  • 2 chicken fillets, cut into pieces (1.5 cm)
  • 1 cup (250 g) green peas
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1 scallion, diced (1 cm)
  • 2 cups (300 g) cooked rice
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce (nam pla)
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1½ tbsp pepper
  • 1 small jalapeno, minced
  • 2 eggs for making omelette

Procedure

  1. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan. When hot, fry the garlic and shallots until brown and fragrant.
  2. Add chicken pieces, carrot, green peas, and red chilli. Stir for two minutes.
  3. Add rice, fish sauce, tomato sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until well mixed.
  4. In a separate pan, heat oil to make the omelette. Beat the eggs and pour them into the pan.
  5. Cook until the egg is browned on the bottom. Flip to cook the other side.
  6. Place a ball of fried rice in the centre of the omelette. Fold up the four edges to enclose the rice.
  7. Flip onto a serving plate and serve hot.
