  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves (cilantro) for garnish
  • Kadai or deep frying pan
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Lid for covering the pan
  • Bowl for smashing dal

Procedure
  1. Wash the toor dal thoroughly. Boil it for about 20 minutes until soft. Drain and smash the dal.
  2. Heat oil in a kadai until hot. Add curry leaves, mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. Fry for a minute while covering to avoid splatter.
  3. Add chopped onion and fry until it turns slightly brown.
  4. Add ginger and garlic paste. Fry for another minute, then add tomatoes. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture.
  5. Add tamarind pieces, turmeric powder, and red chilli powder. Cook for about 4-5 minutes.
  6. Add the smashed toor dal and enough water to achieve your desired thickness.
  7. Add salt to taste. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve hot with roti or over rice.
